Why should I participate in Stony Brook University Giving Day?

Stony Brook University is on an undeniable path. After 62 years of existence, we are already among the top 35 public universities in the country, the top 1 percent of the world, and one of the flagship research universities of the State University of New York system.

We invite you to make a gift on Giving Day to help us go further faster as we write the next chapter of Stony Brook’s incredible story.

What areas can I support?

Please review the ways you can make a difference section on our main page to find the areas you wish to support. Each category has participating funds that need your support. You can give to multiple funds to make a difference for all of the causes that you care about!

What if I don’t see my area of interest?

The Giving Day platform lists the areas of campus that are participating in this inaugural Giving Day. If the fund or area of interest you would like to support is not listed, you can search for and make your gift to it by clicking here so that you can still make a difference for the area that you care about. If you make your gift outside of the Giving Day platform, we cannot guarantee that your gift will be counted online toward giving matches and challenges.

What are Giving Day Challenges?

Challenges and matching gifts help increase support for participating groups. Participating in challenges throughout Stony Brook Giving Day is a great way to make your support go even further. A complete list of challenges are listed in the “MEET A CHALLENGE” section. Check back for updates leading up to and throughout Giving Day.

If you are interested in sponsoring a challenge with a matching gift, please contact Flavio Bollag: Flavio.bollag@stonybrook.edu  (631)-632-4471

What other ways can I get involved?

  1. Share your Stony Brook stories and images using the hashtag #SBUGivingDay to help spread the word!
Visitors to the givingday.stonybrook.edu website can view hourly updates from members of the Stony Brook University community who post using #SBUGivingDay.
  2. Become a Giving Day Champion
Stony Brook Giving Day Champions are our digital fundraising leaders, sharing messages and creating excitement about Stony Brook Giving Day before and during the campaign by creating their own personal fundraising dollar or participation goal. With an investment of a few hours, Ambassadors help spread awareness—asking their network to participate in Stony Brook Giving Day by using their preferred forms of communication: email, text, phone, and social media. If you are interested in becoming a Champion, you can register online, or contact annualfund@stonybrook.edu

Is it possible to make a gift by phone?

Because Giving Day is a 24-hour online giving campaign, we prefer that you make your gift online. This is the only way to assure your gift will be counted live and qualify for the matches and challenges taking place throughout the event.

If you must give by phone, you can call 631-632-4887 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30pm EDT on Tuesday, April 30. We cannot guarantee that your gift will be counted online toward giving matches and challenges.

How can I increase the impact of my donation even more?

Thousands of companies match gifts to higher education, which can double or triple your gift. To find out if your employer (or your spouse’s employer) has a matching gift program, please click here. If your company is eligible, request a matching gift form from your employer, and send it completed and signed after you make your gift online. We will do the rest. The impact of your gift to our organization may be doubled or possibly tripled! Some companies match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses.

Will my gift be tax-deductible?

Your gift will be tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by the law.

Will I receive a receipt for my contribution?

Yes! You will receive an immediate email confirmation, and the Stony Brook Foundation will send you a receipt for your contribution shortly after you make your gift.

Who should I contact with questions about my contribution?

For general questions, please contact annualfund@stonybrook.edu or you may call 631-632-2023.
